We Removed 9 Plugins and Made This Site 2.5× Faster

Let’s talk about plugin bloat — a common problem for WordPress site owners that no one really wants to deal with (until their site grinds to a halt).

This is the story of Linda, an eCommerce store manager who came to us frustrated with her slow site. Sales were dropping. Customers weren’t sticking around. And she wasn’t sure what was causing it.

The Problem: Slow, Bloated, and Buggy

Linda’s site looked great, but it was slow. Really slow.

We ran a full speed audit and discovered the culprit: 9 unnecessary plugins.

Some were doing duplicate jobs. Others hadn’t been updated in years. A few were even causing conflicts that made the checkout experience buggy. Not ideal when you’re trying to sell things online.

What We Did

Plugin Audit & Cleanup
We carefully reviewed every plugin, removed the ones that weren’t needed, and replaced others with lightweight alternatives.

Full-Site Optimization
Once we cleared the clutter, we focused on minifying the code, improving caching, and tuning server performance.

Focus on Function, Not Features
Every plugin we kept had a clear purpose. Less code = less load.

The Plugins We Removed (or Replaced)

  1. WPBakery Page Builder – wasn’t being used (Elementor was active)
  2. Revolution Slider – replaced with a lightweight hero section using Elementor
  3. Jetpack – bloated for eCommerce, removed in favor of targeted functionality
  4. WooCommerce Admin – causing performance issues, replaced with lighter analytics
  5. YITH Wishlist – replaced with a simpler, custom-built wishlist
  6. Facebook for WooCommerce – wasn’t needed; tracking handled via GTM
  7. Mailchimp for WooCommerce – replaced with native API sync via automation
  8. Contact Form 7 – replaced with Elementor’s native form widget
  9. WPForms Lite – duplicate functionality, removed

The Results

After cleanup and optimization:

→ The site now loads 2.5× faster
→ Checkout issues are gone
→ Sales and customer retention both improved

Final Thoughts

It’s easy to keep adding plugins “just in case.” But over time, they pile up — and slow everything down.

If your WordPress site feels sluggish, plugin bloat might be the reason.
